How pickup runs usually pick teams
Most gyms pick teams by shooting free throws, by captains, or by whoever calls next. Each has the same weak spot. Shooting for teams rewards one skill, so you can end up with five shooters and nobody who rebounds. Captains pick their friends. And when winners stay on, a stacked team holds the court all night while everyone else waits on the sideline for one game.
Even teams keep the court moving. When every game is close, the court changes hands, more people play, and the regulars keep coming back. This page is the team generator for all sports, set up for basketball with two teams.
Six skills, rated in a couple of minutes
- Shooting: mid-range, three-point, free throws.
- Ball Handling: dribbling, crossovers, control under pressure.
- Passing: court vision, assists, entry passes.
- Defense: on-ball defense, steals, help defense.
- Rebounding: boxing out, positioning, hustle.
- Athleticism: speed, vertical, endurance.
Basketball has no goalkeeper settings, so everyone is balanced as one pool. To rate quickly, give each player one Overall from 1 to 10 and switch to By skill only for the players whose game leans hard one way: the shooter who can't guard anyone, the big who never puts the ball on the floor. Height isn't on the list, so let it show where it matters, in Rebounding and Defense.
Guards and bigs
The split that ruins the most pickup games is one team with both ball handlers and the other with all the size. On overall ratings the two teams can look identical, two 7s and three 5s each. On the court, one team can't bring the ball up and the other can't get a rebound.
The generator catches this once you rate those players by skill. Part of the score compares the teams skill by skill, so a team strong in Ball Handling and weak in Rebounding, against a team built the other way, scores badly even when their strengths match. Open the Balance Breakdown to check: it shows each team on every skill and highlights the widest gap.
If you have exactly two true bigs and want them on different teams every time, pin them. On the Teams tab, tap one and pin them to their team, then move the other to the other team and pin them there. Players pinned to different teams stay apart, and everyone else is balanced around them.
Three teams and winners stay on
Fifteen people is the classic gym crowd: three teams of five, two on the court and one waiting with next. Set Teams to 3. There are 126,126 ways to split 15 players into three fives, and the generator checks all of them. The score is the gap between the two most different teams, so whichever two teams meet, the game is at least as close as the grade says. The breakdown names the widest pair, which is the matchup to watch.
Winners stay on still rewards the team that gets hot first, but with three close teams the court changes hands more often. With 12 to 14 people, decide first: two teams with subs, or three teams where the short team picks up a player from the team sitting out. The generator splits whoever is ticked into the number of teams you set, and team sizes never differ by more than one.
An example: eleven on a Wednesday
Say eleven show up on Wednesday: ten regulars and a friend someone brought. You paste the names from the group chat, give the ten regulars an Overall from 3 to 8, and leave the newcomer Not rated, so they count as the group's average. Then you switch four players to By skill: your two best ball handlers, and your two tallest players, rated high on Rebounding and low on Ball Handling.
The generator makes a team of six and a team of five, and the six rotate a sub. Team strength is an average, so the extra player isn't counted as extra strength. If the breakdown shows the widest gap in Rebounding, press Auto Balance and look through the other close splits for one that narrows it. And when the newcomer turns out to be the best player in the gym, rate them before the next game and the teams balance again.
Tips for pickup basketball
- Lights and darks. Set Team 1 to Light and Team 2 to Dark, and give a third team its own color. The copied teams say who wears what.
- Rate for the run you play. Athleticism counts for more in full-court runs than in half court, so rate it for the game your group actually plays.
- 3-on-3 and 4-on-4. Set more teams: 12 players make four teams of three, or three teams of four, and the generator checks every split for both.
- Keep the list. Copy my list writes everyone with their ratings, so next week's run starts with one paste.
- Post the teams. Copy teams gives you text for the group chat, and on a phone Share sends it straight to another app.

Questions
Does it work for winners stay on with three teams?
Yes. Set three teams and the generator keeps the gap between the two most different teams as small as it can, so the waiting team is close to whoever wins. It doesn't track who won; when the night's crowd changes, untick or add players and the teams balance again.
How do I keep my two tallest players on different teams?
Rate them by skill, high on Rebounding, and the generator tends to split them on its own. To be certain, pin each one to a different team on the Teams tab.
Can I use it for 3-on-3 or 4-on-4?
Yes. Set the number of teams to match your crowd: nine players in three teams make three teams of three, and 16 players in four teams make four teams of four.
What if 20 people show up?
Set four teams of five. With that many players there are too many splits to check one by one, so the generator scores a large sample, improves the best by swapping players, and says "Best found" in the breakdown.
