Make your teams

How the team generator works
- List your players. One name per line. Paste straight from your group chat if you like.
- Add levels where it matters. 5 for the players everyone wants on their side, 1 for beginners. Anyone without a level counts as a 3, so you only need to rate the ones who stand out.
- Pick the number of teams and press Make fair teams. Team sizes never differ by more than one player.
- Not happy? Shuffle again gives a different split that is just as even. Copy teams puts the line-up on your clipboard, ready for the group chat.
How the teams are balanced
The generator sorts players from strongest to weakest and deals them out like a snake draft: team 1 picks first, the last team picks twice in a row at the turn, and so on. It then swaps players between teams for as long as a swap brings the strongest and weakest team closer together. The result shows each team's total strength and the gap that is left; a gap of 0 means every team adds up to the same total.
Players with the same level are shuffled first, which is why Shuffle again can give new teams without making them less fair.
Tips for fair pickup teams
- Rate honestly, and rate the extremes first. The difference between a 2 and a 4 matters far more than between a 3 and a 3.5.
- Split your two best players. If the top two ever land on one side, give one of them a 5 and the other a 4.5: the generator will separate them.
- Odd numbers are fine. With 11 players for two teams, one side gets the extra player and the generator gives it the weaker mix to match.
- Keepers matter in futsal and soccer. This free tool doesn't know who keeps goal; the balancer in Rostara puts a keeper on each side.
Questions
Is the team generator free?
Yes. It's free, needs no account and works in any browser on a phone or a laptop. Rostara, the app behind it, is free for the weekly game too: events, RSVPs, waitlists and the full team balancer.
Does it save my players?
No. The list stays on this page and disappears when you close it. To keep your players and their levels from week to week, start a group in Rostara.
How many players and teams can it handle?
Up to six teams, and as many players as you can paste. Team sizes never differ by more than one.
Can it balance by more than one skill?
This free tool uses one level per player. Rostara's balancer rates each player on several skills for your sport, keeps those ratings private, and can put a goalkeeper on each team.
